5.0 out of 5 stars I had this camera to review for Olympus. Here are my quick thoughts., January 29, 2011
I asked Olympus if I could review this camera. I had written reviews for them before. To preface the review I will mention that I own several of the Olympus EP2 cameras and the EPL1 camera. While the EPL series cameras don't come with the accessory finder, VF-2, I consider it the reason to buy this camera and this family of cameras. More on that in a second. I gave this camera five stars but you should be clear that all ratings are contextual. It's not a better camera than a Nikon D3 or a Canon 1dsmk3 but it is a wonderful and very capable camera for $600 (with a lens). I consider it an $800 camera because I want to be able to use the 1.4 megapixel finder.

Reasons not to buy one: 1. You shoot sports and need super fast autofocus and a very fast frame rate. 2. You rarely see daylight and want a camera that shoots noise free from 3200 ISO up. Nope, this one is not your camera.

Reasons to buy one: 1. The files right out of the camera (as jpegs) are very... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A seriously good camera for its niche, February 12, 2011

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I am quite surprised at how good the images are that I'm getting, especially jpegs. I'm used to shooting raw because I get better files and can squeeze a bit more juicy goodness out of my photos that in-camera jpeg processing does. Surprisingly, this camera does a great job with jpegs in good light situations. That's the important idea to keep in mind, good light. Kirk Tuck gives this camera a fine review, but realize that he's a lighting pro, who has written several (good) books on the subject.

IMO this camera is targeted toward two markets. For those moving up from a point and shoot, it's wonderful. It's familiar and less intimidating than an SLR. It can create better images than even the best point and shoots. The price is reasonable. It's attractive and it's a lot lighter than an SLR. Those people wouldn't consider shooting in bad light without a flash. They wouldn't consider deliberate long exposures to smooth motion effects. Those last two areas are not the camera's... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic travel and walk around camera!, February 9, 2011
By
Dan Lee (Plantation, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This camera is the perfect travel companion and great for street photography. It doesn't draw too much attention due to its size, styling and small lenses. The in-body image stabilization is fantastic as is the built in flash. The flash is designed in a way that allows it to be bounced off the ceiling, allowing for a more natural look. The wireless flash support was a key seller for me...I don't have an olympus flash unit but plan on picking up the FL-36R for travel. I have this camera with the kit 14-42 and a panasonic 20mm f/1.7. The 14-42 is silent and is sharp, but the lens construction is on the cheap side and it is slow (in f-stop, not autofocus). Autofocus is fantastic with both lenses and comparable to a GF1 in focusing speed. I love the image quality and the high iso performance is pretty good; images are usable at ISO 1600. The noise that is present has a film-like quality....

Overall, this is a fantastic kit at a great price....its not going to replace my... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Compared with GF1 and GH2, December 29, 2011

This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 16 MP Micro 4/3 Compact System Camera with 3-Inch LCD Touch Screen Body Only (Black) (Electronics)
I own the GF1 and GH2 so I'll be comparing with those two cameras. I like the rangefinder-like body but as with using a camera, the photos and image quality comes above all. That's the reason why I use my GH2 more often than the GF1. But now with the GX1, it seems like Panasonic is finally able to put GH2 capability into a GF1 body. That's something I've been looking for.

- BUILT

The GX1 construction is sturdy. It's a metal body and now comes with a new rubber grip that I like. You get a firmer hold when using heavier lens.

The GX1 is slightly slimmer than GF1. At 272g, it's 13g lighter than GF1 and 120g lighter than GH2. By the way, the LVF2 is 36g.

Buttons behind are rearranged a bit. I've read a few reviews saying the buttons are cheap and misaligned, but I don't think that's so with my set.

The new flash can now be tilted back for a bounce lighting so that's useful. But the flash films filmsy. I seldom use it even with my GF1... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Not quite a Contax G2, but an excellent camera, January 29, 2012

I normally don't post reviews, but I've been surprised at how few reviews of this camera there are on Amazon. Some of the negative reviews have also been a bit bizarre, IMHO, so I wanted to share my opinion with other photo enthusiasts. Specifically, I'm writing to people who loved (or still love) the discontinued Contax G2.

My gold standard for a mirrorless (ie. rangefinder) camera is the Contax G2, which is a film camera. It stopped production when Contax died some time ago, but it still has a cult-like following. Some called it the poor man's Leica, but it's really an excellent camera. The mechanics were mostly very solid (the viewfinder housing was flimsy), the focus was confident and fast, and it had a suite of outstanding lenses. It was easy to hold, durable, and very pretty. I took a lot of photos with my G2 that I'm very fold of. Then I sold it because I got tired of scanning film.

I've been hoping someone would come up with a digital camera like the G2... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Small and stylish camera, has some flaws, February 24, 2012
By

3.5 stars. Tired of carrying a heavy DSLR around, I was intrigued by the promise of micro four thirds. And the Panasonic GX1 attracted me most of all: small, stylish, with great functionality and build quality. Especially when combined with the new X lenses, it seemed like the perfect tiny package.

Reality has turned out a bit different, and I'd like to cover some things in this review that haven't seen covered in much detail in other reviews.

But first the good news: The Panasonic GX1 is very small and lightweight, and so are most of the lenses you can buy for it. Image quality is excellent, if not quite up to the same standard as the 1.5x format sensors available from Sony, Nikon and others. The build quality is quite good, and the usability is very good. Panasonic has done a great job with the touch-screen interface. The autofocus is fast and extremely accurate, much more accurate than any DSLR.

There are of course some drawbacks. The 16MP panasonic... Read more

This review is from: Sony NEX-5NK/B 16.1MP Compact Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera in Black with 18-55mm Lens + Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens (Electronics)
I've had a Sony NEX-5N for 4 months and used it on 2 trips and many local photos. I've mostly replaced a Nikon D90 with the NEX-5N. The major advantage is portability: its very small and light. I was concerned before purchasing about the out-sized lens in relation to the body, especially compared to the M4/3 cameras, but in practice this isn't an issue. The NEX-5N isn't pocketable, but it is still very light and easy to carry.

Image quality with the large sensor is very good. Hi-ISO photographs are about a stop better than the Nikon D90 (although the highest ISO settings are unusable).

My biggest complaint is the controls. The menu structure is large and it can be hard to remember where a particular setting is. The single control dial can be customized, so I can make most of the controls I care about directly accessible, which allows me to avoid the menus for most uses. (A menu of recently used items would still be a useful addition, however.) But I... Read more
