5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING CAMERA!!!, August 15, 2011

This review is from: Sony Alpha NEX-C3 16 MP Compact Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black) (Camera)
So I bought this camera last week and took it on a 5 day trip to Arches, Bryce Canyon, & Canyonlands Nation Parks. It was great! We took video, pics, and everything. I sold my Nikon D80 and bought this and between the two, I think the photos are much nicer on the NEX C3. My only gripe is that the battery could last a little longer. I bought a big 16GB card and I have to charge the battery about 3-4 times in order to fill the card now. So it would be nice to have a little extra juice on the battery.

The camera is super small. I read all kinds of reviews, watched videos, etc.... but was not ready for how small it was once I held it in my hands. I have pretty big hands and it was a little weird to hold because of it. It wasn't a deal breaker by any means, but something to be aware. It is tiny. The weight and main bulk of the camera is the 18-55mm lens that comes with it, and not the camera body.

I've gone back and reviewed the video and photos I took. I can't say... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars All Things Considered, an Amazing Camera, August 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I've had many different digital cameras, but this one has rapidly become my favorite in most respects.

Camara Body and Feel
It is very small and comfortable to hold. It feels sturdy and well-built. All of the buttons are solid to the touch. Changing lenses is simple and fast, and it comes with an attachable flash.

The Menus/Interface
The interface is mostly easy to use and understand. It will take a little time to get used to, but it shouldn't be too much of a hindrance. There are only a couple of buttons on the camera that specifically do one function. Most of the buttons are assignable, so you can quickly get at the options you use most.

Image Quality
Stunning. Unless you're a professional who is used to cameras that cost several times as much as this, you will be impressed at the image quality. The large sensor allows for a lot of fine detail and really helps when there's not much light. The low-light capabilities of this... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars what a wonderful camera, November 1, 2011
First let me say that I was an advanced point and shoot person just looking for better pictures, no more and no less. No, you do not need the Sony Nex 5N camera. The C3 is wonderful. Absolutely beautiful pictures. You CAN NOT get the depth of field, and the proper shadows that should be in pictures when you shoot normal people in a point and shoot camera. You need a full size APS-C sensor that is in the DSLR cameras but at a fraction of the size of these big cameras. The color and flesh tones are amazing. The richness of colors of the things in the backgrounds are so accurate. This camera uses easy to understand menus on the LED screen making this camera ideal for those afraid of stepping up to a full sensor camera. You do not have to know what an F stop is, an aperture, or what shutter speed to use to get great pictures. Just set it on automatic. This camera is so accurate in its picture taking. In low light you will get pictures you can not believe. This camera has so many in... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the perfect camera!, June 24, 2010

This review is from: Sony Alpha NEX-3 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Black)-14.2 Mpix (Camera)
I have been waiting a lifetime for this camera and it was worth the wait! It provides excellent quality shots in the smallest possible sized body. I am a point-and-shoot user who has been disappointed with the photo quality that comes from even expensive point-and-shoot cameras but who has never bought a DSLR because I knew I would never want to lug one around. If this describes you, then this is your perfect camera. Or, if you own a DSLR and use 5% or less of the features on your camera, this is also the camera for you. On the other hand, if you're a skilled DSLR user, skip this camera because you'll be frustrated the compromises that make this camera a smart choice for the average consumer.

Why is this camera "perfect" if you're a typical or even advanced point-and-shoot user?

COMPARED WITH POINT-AND-SHOOTS, you'll immediately see the following improvements:
- Low light/indoor shots are dramatically better
- Quicker shutter response time
-... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, for what it is, December 27, 2010

This review is from: Sony Alpha NEX-3 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Black)-14.2 Mpix (Camera)
Mirrorless SLR's are the current hot thing. I've done wedding photography for years on the side, and when I want to be serious about taking pictures I lug a bag full of pro-level lenses and cameras around. Frankly, that gets old, especially when you're on vacation. I've been hoping for quite a while to find a camera that would offer SLR-like quality in a smaller form factor that would allow it to be carried around all day with minimal effort. I owned a Panasonic LX-2 and more recently a Canon Powershot S90, and while both were decent cameras, I never really fell in love with their images.

The NEX-3 is a classic case of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. On the upside, the sensor is excellent, even by modern SLR standards. You're not quite on the cutting edge (think Pentax K-5), but you're pretty darn close - certainly exceeding the previous generation of SLR sensors. With a plethora of adapters for other lenses, high quality glass is also available, and can produce some... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera with poor battery life, July 10, 2010
By
Julie Le (Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony Alpha NEX-3 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Black)-14.2 Mpix (Camera)
The reviewer above did an excellent review, so mine will pale in comparison. I bought this camera the very first day it was available (June 29) and have been playing around with it since. It takes beautiful low light photos, even without a tripod, which I'm very pleased with. I have yet to use the flash that came with it.

Anyway, great camera, don't regret my purchase... The only downside that I want to point out is the battery life. I realize the big screen and the continuous autofocus uses up a lot of power, but this camera REALLY sucks up battery power. If you went out for a day of shooting on a fully charged battery, you will need an extra. The camera seems to even suck up a lot of power when it's not even on. There is new firmware that claims to reduce battery consumption when off, so hopefully that will be an improvement. Which leads to another downside, which is that firmware is only available for Windows and not Mac.

Other than that, beautiful beautiful... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera - be sure to customize the menus, November 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sony NEX-5N 16.1 MP Compact Interchangeable Lens Touchscreen Camera With 18-55mm Lens (Silver) (Camera)
(Minor updates below added in June 2012). I bought the NEX-5N in mid-October 2011 just before a trip to Europe. The bottom line: it takes superb photos without flash, especially in truly adverse lighting conditions (wine caves 1,000 years old, for example). As others have written, the camera with the 18-55 zoom takes extremely high quality photos - there's no quality penalty to get the benefit of the small size and light weight vs. a top DSLR. So I think it could be used happily by both people trading up and people trading down. But the camera does have quirks, some serious. Many other reviews cover the overall high points of the camera, so I'll focus on a few review elements I think need reinforcement.

The NEX-5N has a full auto mode, but I hope most buyers will take the trouble to learn the camera's full capabilities, because the camera can produce some amazing photos once liberated from auto mode. However I have to say that the learning curve is steep, not just... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality of photos, light, excellent low light performance, October 20, 2011

This review is from: Sony NEX-5N 16.1 MP Compact Interchangeable Lens Touchscreen Camera With 18-55mm Lens (Silver) (Camera)
I am a long-time DSLR camera user who wanted a small camera to travel with. I was looking for a camera which would produce results similar to my DSLR and allow me to change lenses yet be lighter than my current Canon DSLR camera.

I like:

(1) The camera is really light compared to my DSLR. Several times I panicked "where is my camera" while it was hanging around my neck. It was so light that I did not feel its weight.

The body of the camera is 4 1/8 inches wide x 1 inch wide in the narrow part. It is small but not so small that is inconvenient to hold or operate. Overall the camera feels good in your hand, the mechanical parts (hinges and other controls) feel well made and pretty sturdy.

(2) I am pleased with the quality of the photos I took.

(3) Features that I loved, two features I never had in other cameras I owned:
* Sweeping panorama - I absolutely loved it! It worked fantastically even hand held taking photos of night... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good as a high-quality Point-and-Shoot, not suitable for the advanced photographer, December 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sony NEX-5N 16.1 MP Compact Interchangeable Lens Touchscreen Camera With 18-55mm Lens (Silver) (Camera)
I'm reviewing this as a high-end prosumer camera, a grab-and-go camera to complement or even replace my SLR in most situations, which is what most cameras in this range are targeted at. I recently had the opportunity to compare the NEX-5N side by side with a Nikon P7100. I had very high hopes for this camera, especially given the great reviews and its large sensor. Yet, the quick summary is overall, the Nikon wins. Why?

I won't mention all the details that the other reviewers have covered very well. Rather, again, I'll focus on its use as an camera for an advanced amateur - someone who knows the kind of shot they want to take, and wants to take it quickly, without needing to use an SLR.

Pro NEX-5N
- SLR-size sensor means great image quality, even at high ISO. However, in practice it isn't much better than the G12 or Nikon P7100 as it ought to be given that it has ~3x the surface area. (I tested this with RAW settings on all cameras).
- I like the zoom... Read more
